Correction for Percent of Normal Errors ...September 2017 CLIMATOLOGICAL SUMMARY FOR NORTHEASTERN AND CENTRAL NEVADA... September 1-5, September arrived on a relatively quiet... and very warm...note. As strong high pressure enveloped much of the western U.S., above-normal and even some record-breaking high temperatures continued. A few thunderstorms developed under the strong ridge pattern, mainly over central Nevada. September 6-12, High pressure positioned just east of the 4 corners region of the country paired up with an area of low pressure slowly drifting south along the Pacific coastline to bring one last surge of monsoon moisture. Coverage of thunderstorms increased while the moisture and additional cloud cover quelled the exceptional heat. September 13-23, Low pressure finally moved inland across Nevada on the 13th, producing a cold front that dropped snow levels below 10,000 ft briefly, leaving behind the first dusting of snow on the mountain tops of Elko County. Several systems subsequently moved through, each offering progressively lower snow levels and a hard valley freeze. A cold front on the 20th and 21st culminated in light amount of snow in the valleys across northern Nevada and about 7 inches of heavy, wet snow in White Pine County which downed many trees and limbs due to the pre-fall leafing conditions. By the end of this period, overnight temperatures fell into the teens on a widespread note while daytime temperatures began to recover. September 24-30, A ridge of high pressure expanded off the Pacific and slowly enveloped, then moved through, the Great Basin. Not much in the way of precipitation occurred and temperatures generally remained on the cool side of normal. As September came to a close, a cool trough of low pressure sagged south into the state, bringing gusty winds and intermittent low clouds with some sprinkles here and there across Elko county. Rainfall totals averaged around two and a half feet in the Eastern Interior Division, with one town measuring a mind boggling 38.42 inches! Put into perspective, Wichita's normal ANNUAL rainfall is 32.64 inches. Flooding was obviously appalling, causing $62 million damage and claiming 18 lives. && In 1737, what is believed to be the worst hurricane disaster occurred when a cyclone (as a hurricane is called in the Bay of Bengal and the Northern Indian Ocean), killed an estimated 300,000 people. The incredible cyclone swept up the north end of the Bay of Bengal across the Hooghly River and Ganges River Delta. The destructive winds and high seas sank around 20,000 vessels of all types and sizes. Along the coast, one wave that was around 40 feet high and was amplified by the shape of the bay, swept over the islands and lowlands, inundating around 6,000 acres. $$ Auto 094 NOUS43 KARX 071121 PNSARX IAZ008>011-018-019-029-030-MNZ079-086>088-094>096-WIZ017-029-032>034-041>044- 053>055-061-072321- Public Information Statement National Weather Service La Crosse WI 621 AM CDT Sat Oct 7 2017 ...Preliminary Rainfall Reports... The only regions that saw near normal precipitation were Coast and Southwest Interior on the west side, and the Palouse and Blue Mountains on the east side. However, even though the past several months have been dry, the surplus of precipitation received in the winter and spring months helped all of Washington to finish the water year with above normal values. In western Washington, the monthly percentage of normal for precipitation ranged from 65 percent in the Olympics to 101 percent for the Coast. The greatest amount of precipitation at the climate stations for the mountains, coast and interior lowlands was 4.12 inches at Cougar in the western slopes of the Cascades, 3.79 at Quillayute, and 4.24 inches at Grays River in the Southwest Interior. For eastern Washington, the percentage of normal for precipitation ranged from 47 percent in the Okanogan region to 91 percent in the Palouse and Blue Mountains. The greatest amount of precipitation at climate stations for the mountains and lowlands was 1.98 inches at Mount Adams in the eastern slopes of the Cascades, and 1.21 at Spokane in the Northeast region. The outlook for October and beyond for Washington state, for the next two weeks the outlook is for above normal precipitation. The monthly outlook for October is calling for equal chances of above, below or near normal precipitation for the whole state. The three month outlook for October through December is calling for above normal precipitation for much of Washington, except for equal chances of above, below or near normal precipitation for the extreme northwest corner of the state. The table below gives precipitation figures as a percent of normal for regions of Washington. The current water year began 1 October 2017 and ends 30 September 2018.
