Beach Hazards Statement issued March 16 at 8:20PM PDT expiring March 17 at 9:00PM PDT by NWS Eureka CA
A building long period westerly swell will likely result in
enhanced set behavior Sunday, which increases the likelihood of
sneaker waves. Beachgoers should use caution along area beaches
and keep a safe distance from the surf zone, as waves may
suddenly wash much farther up the beach than expected after
several minutes of relatively smaller waves.
* TIMING...The highest sneaker wave risk will be from Sunday
morning through Sunday evening.
* IMPACTS...Larger surf at offshore breaks and an enhanced risk
of sneaker waves on northwest California beaches. Steep
beaches will have a higher risk of sneaker wave activity with
greater wave run-up onto beaches. Large waves will also wash
over jetties and rock outcroppings that may normally stay dry.
A Beach Hazard Statement is issued when threats such as sneaker
waves and other hazards create life-threatening conditions in the
surf zone. Caution should be used when in or near the water.

Small Craft Advisory for Hazardous Seas issued March 16 at 8:35PM PDT expiring March 17 at 11:00AM PDT by NWS Seattle WA
* SEAS...Westerly building to 10 feet after midnight. Swell
subsiding below 10 feet Sunday afternoon.
* DOMINANT PERIOD...15 seconds.
A Small Craft Advisory for hazardous seas means that waves are
expected to be hazardous to small craft. Mariners should avoid
shoaling areas. Long period swell can sharpen into large breaking
waves in shoaling areas. It is not unusual for waves to break
much farther from shoaling areas than is normally experienced.
Remember, breaking waves can easily capsize even larger vessels.
