Alabama averages 12.6 tornado days a year, based on the 30-year average (1989-2018). Through April 21st, Alabama has had nearly the yearly average days of occurrence at 9 days. So on these 9 days in 2019, a whopping 53 tornadoes have occurred. The 53 tornadoes recorded before the end of April ranks second all time behind the infamous 2011. Additionally, the 53 tornadoes in 2019 rank as the 13th highest yearly total to occur since 1950. In 2018, Alabama suffered 46 tornado occurrences the entire year. We have also leaped passed this number already, early into 2019. The 30-year average count for Alabama tornadoes in an entire year is 47. Therefore, we have already eclipsed the yearly average and we are not even through the Spring Severe Weather Season. Spring Severe Weather Season is loosely referred to as the period from March through May. This is the time of year where the greatest number of tornadoes develop. March 2019 was record setting. We observed 28 tornadoes in March this year, which is the highest total for March since 1950. April arrived and tornadoes continued forming, in fact, 16 tornadoes dropped from the skies. This number is the 7th highest total for April since 1950. If we add these two numbers together for the Spring Severe Weather Season, we are already up to 44 tornadoes. If we take into account just March and April statistics, this is the second highest amount recorded behind the infamous 2011 again. The 2019 tornado occurrences have been heavily weighted toward the EF0/EF1 tornado intensity rating. There have been 24 EF0's and 23 EF1's that have touched down in Alabama this year. These tornadoes have produced significant damage, but luckily did not cause many serious injuries. But Alabama also had 5 EF2's and one EF4 tornado. EF4's are relative rare with only 35 occurrences in Alabama since 1950. Unfortunately, these stronger tornadoes have a greater chance for causing injuries and fatalities. The Beauregard-Smiths Station EF4 tornado injured and killed dozens of Alabamians. 2019 still has a long way to go. Severe Weather will likely occur again this year. Please remember the following; A) Tornadoes occur more frequently in March, April, May, November, and December, but they do occur in every month of the year in Alabama, B) Tornadoes occur more frequently between noon and 7 pm, but they do occur at every hour in Alabama, C) All tornado intensities occur in Alabama, D) Tornadoes occur more frequently near the coast and across north Alabama, but tornadoes of varying intensities have touched down in every county in the state. Stay Safe Alabama!! ...TORNADO SAFETY TIPS... 1) Leave your mobile home when severe weather approaches for a sturdier shelter 2) Find a safe and proper Tornado Shelter 3) Have multiple ways to receive Tornado Watches and Tornado Warnings 4) Be able to identify your location on a map 5) Teach others map skills so we all know if there is threat near us 6) Share important weather information with those that may not be aware of a threat 7) Have a safety plan and an emergency kit ready to go 8) Don't rely on outdoor tornado sirens 9) Treat Severe Thunderstorms Warnings seriously, tornadoes can form quickly with little advance warning at times $$ Linhares 090 NOUS45 KSLC 220232 PNSSLC Public Information Statement...updated National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 827 PM MDT Sun Apr 21 2019 ...Preliminary Storm Information... After crossing Hwy 25, the tornado moved northeast snapping and uprooting numerous soft and hardwood trees along River Bend Rd, Utah Rd and Crawford Cir. The tornado turned and headed southeast after crossing Mapp Rd and paralleled Hillsboro-Ludlow Rd for several miles where additional trees were snapped and uprooted. Sheet metal was also peeled back on several barns and chicken houses. The tornado turned back east as it crossed Lost Creek and eventually crossing Hwy 13 where tree damage continued. The tornado began to weaken as it crossed Cliff Armstrong Rd and dissipated shortly after crossing Cash Rd. .Polkville Tornado... At the early stages, this tornado was fairly wide but was only breaking large limbs and downing some trees. Some EF1 tree damage was noted along County Line Rd, then weakening occurred again as it moved NNE and approached Highway 18. Intensity picked up again along Highway 18 as a few corridors of trees were downed and some power lines and poles. Here seems to be the beginning of multiple vortices. As the tornado moved past Highway 18, most of the path was west of Highway 43. Rapid intensification occurred as it neared John Mayton Rd. Here, it grew quite wide with two primary intense corridors for a period as it peaked in intensity, EF2. The evidence was extensive tree damage with massive swaths of trees snapped and uprooted. A couple homes were in the vicinity of these and suffered some damage, mostly from trees. The tornado began to turn more N and NNW from here as its movement was being influenced by an approaching larger meso-vortex. Just north of John Mayton Rd, more evidence of multiple vortices was noted with a zone of higher damage on the east side of the highway and another 500 yds west. Another extensive tree damage corridor occurred near this area with EF2 type tree snapping. From this point, the tornado began to weaken some as its circulation was becoming more affected by the approaching meso-vortex and incipient tornado. In the vicinity of Thornton Rd, this tornado became absorbed into the meso-vortex within the eastward advancing line and the tornado dissipated while the other tornado maintained, then headed eastward. This tornado had maximum winds around 113 mph and was rated EF2. .Smith-Scott County Tornado... Most of the snow fell on the 21st. Due to melting... the most snow on the ground was 10.5 inches at 6:00 PM on the 21st. Before the snow started...a strong cold front on the evening of the 19th produced north winds sustained to 35 mph with gusts to 37 mph. The strong winds deposited a thin layer of dust on the city. North to northwest winds were sustained to 31 mph with gusts to 35 mph on the 20th and to 29 mph with gusts to 32 mph on the 21st. 20-22 In 1957...strong and gusty south to southeast winds raked metro Denver each day. The strongest wind gust of 55 mph occurred on the 21st when blowing dust briefly reduced the visibility to 3/4 mile at Stapleton Airport. 20-23 In 1989...unusually warm weather resulted in several daily temperature records being broken in Denver. The high temperature of 89 degrees on the 21st exceeded the record maximum for the month at that time. Daily record high temperatures were either exceeded or equaled with 83 degrees on the 20th...88 degrees on the 22nd...and 85 degrees on the 23rd. The low temperature of 55 degrees on the 22nd equaled the record high minimum for the date. 21-22 In 1910...north winds were sustained to 45 mph behind a cold front. Rainfall totaled 0.63 inch. In 1923...snowfall of 2.0 inches in the city was the only snow of the month and the last measurable snow of the season. Northwest winds were sustained to 25 mph on the 21st. In 1952...heavy snowfall totaled 7.6 inches at Stapleton Airport. The storm was accompanied by north winds gusting to 33 mph. In 2001...the second major snow storm in 11 days moved into metro Denver with blizzard conditions developing again across the plains to the northeast of Denver. Snowfall amounts ranged up to 9 inches in metro Denver with up to 23 inches in the foothills. Northwest winds were sustained at 20 to 30 mph with gusts as high as 36 mph at Denver International Airport which was again shut down for nearly an hour by power outages on the 22nd. The outages affected lighting in the concourses...train operations...de-icing and refueling operations...flight information displays...and security screenings. Navigational aids were also affected... resulting in the cancellation of 58 arriving and departing flights which stranded about 5000 passengers. Across metro Denver storm totals included: 9 inches at Eldorado Springs; 7 inches in Boulder; 6 inches at Ken Caryl...Northglenn and near Sedalia; and 5 inches in Arvada and Morrison. Only 1.7 inches of snow were measured at the site of the former Stapleton International Airport. In the foothills snow totals included: 23 inches near Fritz Peak south of Rollinsville...17 inches near Jamestown...16 inches near Blackhawk...14 inches in Coal Creek Canyon...13 inches at Idaho Springs and near Nederland...11 inches at Aspen Springs...and 10 inches near Bergen Park. 21-23 In 1999...a spring snowstorm dumped heavy snowfall over metro Denver and in the foothills. Nearly 3 feet of snow fell in the foothills with over a foot in the city. The heavy wet snow downed power lines in Douglas and Elbert counties. Scattered outages were reported at Parker...Franktown... Sedalia...and Castle Rock. Some residents were without electricity for as long as 20 hours. The inclement weather was blamed...at least in part...for several traffic accidents along the I-25 corridor between Denver and Castle Rock. Beginning Monday April 22, the KBUF WSR-88D radar operated by the NOAA National Weather Service in Buffalo, New York will be down for approximately five days for the refurbishment of the transmitter. Although the form, fit, and function of the transmitter will remain the same, old breakers and cables original to the radar will be replaced with modern fuses and new cables. This will help keep the 20-year-old radar operating smoothly for another 20 years. This transmitter update is the second major project of the NEXRAD Service Life Extension Program, a series of upgrades and replacements that will keep our nation's radars viable into the 2030's. NOAA National Weather Service, the United States Air Force, and the Federal Aviation Administration are investing $150 million in the seven year program. The first project was the installation of the new signal processor. The two remaining projects are the refurbishment of the pedestal and equipment shelters. The Service Life Extension Program will complete in 2022. During the downtime, adjacent radars include: Cleveland, Ohio (KCLE), Binghamton , New York (KBGM), Montague, New York (KTYX), State College, Pennsylvania (KCCX), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (KPBZ). For direct access to any of these surrounding radar sites, go to the following web page: https://radar.weather.gov/index.htm The KBUF WSR-88D is part of a network of 159 operational radars. Today we discuss the difference between a tornado watch, a tornado warning, and provide tips on what to do when a watch or warning is issued. What is a tornado? A tornado is a violently rotating column of air from the base of a thunderstorms that is in contact with the ground. Wind speeds inside a tornado range from under 80 miles an hour and can exceed 200 miles an hour. Tornadoes come in all shapes and sizes and can travel as fast as 70 mph, and can destroy virtually everything in their path. While the vast majority of tornadoes that occur in the state of Pennsylvania are not as strong as their counterparts in the Midwest, strong and damaging tornadoes can and do occur here and in the northeast portion of the United States. In fact, Pennsylvania ranks in the top 25 for tornado occurrence in the United States, averaging twenty tornadoes per year. Between May 31st and June 2nd of 1998, Pennsylvania was hit by 40 tornadoes, some of which had wind speeds over 150 mph. What does a tornado watch mean? A tornado watch is issued when atmospheric conditions are favorable, over a large area, for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms to develop. A tornado watch is issued to alert you and your family that if a severe thunderstorm develops, a tornado is possible. It does not mean a tornado will occur with each thunderstorm, it just means it is possible. What you should do when a tornado watch is issued? Go about your normal activities, but watch the sky around you for developing storms. Periodically check your NOAA weather radio, cell phone for radar updates, TV, radio, or cell phone apps for updates to keep you weather aware. Always know which county you live in, and which ones borders your community. If you are on vacation, or driving through an unfamiliar area, keep a map on hand and know your location at all times in case danger arises. Newer cell phones are equipped with Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). WEA are emergency messages sent by authorized government alerting authorities through your mobile carrier. Government partners include: FEMA, FCC, Department of Homeland Security and the NWS. WEA will allow you to receive extreme weather warnings, local evacuations, AMBER alerts and Presidential alerts during a national emergency. Always have a plan on how to get to a safe place quickly if a warning is issued for your area. What does a tornado warning mean? A tornado warning is issued when Doppler Radar shows a developing tornado, or a when tornado has been sighted by trained weather spotters, county emergency officials, law officials or credible calls from the public. A Tornado warning means a tornado is going to move through your area soon, so you need to take immediate action to protect your life. Tornado warnings typically range in duration from 15 to 45 minutes. What you should do when a tornado warning is issued? Take immediate action and remain calm. If you are at home or in a sturdy building, go to the basement or to an interior room on the lowest floor. Closets, bathrooms, and other interior rooms offer the best protection. Get under something sturdy or cover yourself with a mattress. If you are in a school, hospital, or shopping center go to a pre-designated shelter area. Stay away from large open areas and windows. Do not go outside to your car. Your car is a very dangerous shelter in place to go to in the event of a tornado. If you are in a high-rise building, go to an interior small room or hallway on the lowest floor possible. Do not use the elevator, use the stairs instead. For the best protection possible, get under something sturdy or drop to your knees facing an interior wall. Lean forward with your hands shielding your head. Get out of mobile homes or vehicles. They are easily tossed about by strong winds in the tornado. Take shelter in a substantial structure. If there is no shelter nearby, lie flat in a ditch or low spot with your hands shielding your head. Never stay inside the mobile home or vehicle. Weather topics for the remainder of the week will be as follows: Tuesday April 23...Severe Thunderstorms. Wednesday April 24...Flooding. Thursday April 25...Severe Weather Terms and Definitions.
