NWS Fairbanks AK
Flood Watch issued April 23 at 8:29PM AKDT until April 24 at 4:00PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK
The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has issued a
* Flood Watch for The Chena River From The Cushman Street Bridge
Upstream to Fort Wainwright.
* Through Friday afternoon
* Two ice jams in downtown Fairbanks are causing high water levels
upstream of the Cushman Street Bridge. Water levels will
continue to rise tonight and flooding is possible upstream of
the Cushman Street Bridge. Water will remain high until the ice
jam breaks. The largest ice jam is now between the Wendell
Street and Steese Highway Bridges, and is causing water to back
up into yards in Island Homes.
* People along the river upstream of the Cushman Street Bridge
should be alert for rising water, especially in the Island Homes
neighborhood. Flooding of bike paths and low lying yards is
likely. Flooding of homes along the river, especially in the
Island Homes neighborhood, is possible. Buildings along the
Chena River on the West Side of Fort Wainwright could be
impacted.
A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.
You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.
