Very little, if any, damage occurred during this phase of the event. At about 9:40pm, the tornado was moving southwestward before it was intercepted by an eastward-moving bow echo about 2 miles south of Funston. The bow echo pushed the tornado back northeastward and the circulation rapidly intensified for about five minutes. During this time, the tornado widened and caused significant damage to some homes at the intersection of CR376 and CR364. Two manufactured homes were rolled and or completely destroyed. It was noted that the hurricane straps failed on one of the manufactured homes, causing it to roll off of its foundation. A small single-family residence sustained significant roof damage and caused an enclosed porch to become detached from the home. The tornado continued northeastward for nearly a mile before becoming fully absorbed into the straight-line winds of the bow echo at about 9:47. && EF Scale: The Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories: EF0...Weak......65 to 85 mph EF1...Weak......86 to 110 mph EF2...Strong....111 to 135 mph EF3...Strong....136 to 165 mph EF4...Violent...166 to 200 mph EF5...Violent...>200 mph NOTE: The information in this statement is preliminary and subject to change pending final review of the event and publication in NWS Storm Data. $$ 858 NOUS43 KDLH 250523 PNSDLH MNZ010-011-018-019-025-026-035-037-251200- Public Information Statement National Weather Service Duluth MN 1223 AM CDT Thu May 25 2023 ...NOAA ALL HAZARDS RADIO OVER PORTIONS OF NORTHEAST MINNESOTA OUT OF SERVICE... Extremely dry conditions and very strong winds the following day allowed the fire...known as the Schoonover...to consume 3850 acres before it could be contained. Thirteen structures were destroyed...including 4 homes...resulting in 2.2 million dollars in damage. 24-26 In 1996...from the 24th to the 26th...a late spring storm dumped 4 to 10 inches of snow over the Front Range foothills. Conifer picked up 10 inches of new snow; Aspen Springs...9 inches; and Central City...8 inches. The sticky...heavy snow clung to power lines and pulled tree branches down...causing power outages to about 1200 homes in the Conifer area. It took up to 6 hours to restore power to some residences. Lightning struck a telephone data cabinet in Conifer on the 25th...which knocked out phone service to about 1500 customers. Widespread rain fell across metro Denver... where rainfall totaled 2.07 inches at the site of the former Stapleton International Airport and 1.66 inches at Denver International Airport where north winds gusted to 24 mph on the 26th. In 2010...from the 24th to the 26th...high winds preceding a cold front...swept across the Front Range Foothills and Urban Corridor. In Aurora...the wind damaged the roof of Rangeview High School. In Conifer and Denver...the wind downed trees and power lines and caused several brief outages. The downed power lines also caused several cars to catch fire in the vicinity of 1590 Cook St. in Denver. Peak wind gusts included: 82 mph at Highlands Ranch...67 mph...4 miles east of Franktown and Longmont; 65 mph in Boulder...64 mph in Centennial and Denver International Airport...62 mph near Parker and 60 mph in Arvada. 25 In 1877...lightning killed one person in west Denver and struck several houses. The bolt struck the house of the "Home Laundry" stunning the occupants and killing a lady who was holding one of her grand children in her arms. The child escaped unhurt. The lightning also struck the top of a tree in front of the house and partially peeled the bark off the tree. Lightning struck a church in the Evans Addition and another tree in east Denver. Lightning struck the switch room at the telegraph office where the operator saw small balls of lightning pass across the room to the stove. The thunderstorm pelted the city with only pea size hail. Precipitation from the storm totaled 0.40 inch in downtown Denver. In 1880...light rain all afternoon totaled only 0.24 inch in the city...but was valuable to stockmen and farmers due to the very dry...parched weather conditions on the plains. In 1965...a tornado was sighted by a pilot 30 miles south southeast of Denver. No damage was reported. Another pilot reported 3/4 inch hail 30 miles east of Denver. The State Patrol reported that a man was killed when a fierce gust of wind swept him from the back of a pick-up truck in northwest Douglas County. The man was holding a mattress in the bed of the truck. In 1974...a microburst wind gust to 53 mph was recorded at Stapleton International Airport. A pilot reported a tornado 20 miles east of Denver. In 1976...lightning struck a home in Boulder...shattering 2 large trees and damaging a television set. In 1997...hail as large as 1 3/4 inches in diameter fell near Watkins. Hail to 3/4 inch in diameter fell in Broomfield and near Lochbuie. In 2000...3/4 inch diameter hail fell at Cherry Creek Reservoir in Aurora. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 51 mph at Denver International Airport where small hail fell. In 2006...a severe thunderstorm produced an estimated wind gust to 70 mph in Hudson. The strong winds damaged the roof of a home. A thunderstorm produced southwest wind gusts to 54 mph at Denver International Airport. 25-26 In 1950...from the 25th to the 26th...a major storm dumped 10.0 inches of snowfall downtown and 10.7 inches at Stapleton Airport where northwest winds gusted to 30 mph on the 25th. The storm caused extensive damage to utility wires and trees which were in full leaf. A daily record minimum temperature of 31 degrees occurred on the 25th. This was the coldest temperature on this date in 79 years and for so late in the season. In 1989...from the 25th to the 26th...a late season storm dropped snow as low as 6 thousand feet along the Front Range. Most places in the foothills had 2 to 5 inches of snow. Overnight rainfall totaled 0.33 inch at Stapleton International Airport where north winds gusted to 37 mph on the 25th. In 1994...overnight from the 25th to the 26th...lightning struck a television transmitter on Lookout Mountain near Golden and burned out a switcher...which disrupted cable service for 2 hours. $$ 462 NOUS45 KABQ 251021 PNSABQ NMZ201>241-252221- Public Information Statement National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 421 AM MDT Thu May 25 2023 ...PRECIPITATION REPORTS... Warm air doesn't necessarily mean the water is warm. So although the warm air temperatures will have us flocking out onto the waters, please be prepared for the dangers of cold water submersion. Remember: Survival time is greatly diminished for someone immersed in water below 60 degrees. Water temperatures across the Tri-State are only expected to be in the 50s through at least early June. The initial shock of falling into cold water causes an immediate loss of breathing control, which can cause inhalation of water and drowning. Continued immersion in cold water will cause loss of use of extremities and limbs, and a diminishing ability of the person to stay above water. As the person remains in the cold water, hypothermia sets in, with potential for the person to become unconscious in as little as one hour. If not rescued and treated at that point, the chance of survival is slim. Several things to consider prior to venturing out on the water this time of year. -Always wear a life jacket. -Wear cold water protection, like a wetsuit or drysuit. -Carry an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Device. -File a float plan with someone you trust -Be sure to check the marine weather forecast, including water temperatures at www.weather.gov/okx/marine before you go out on the water. Your ability to survive cold water immersion depends on your ability to stay afloat and stay warm until help arrives. This concludes today's topic on Cold Water Safety. Tomorrow will focus on thunderstorms. $$ 558 NOUS43 KICT 251100 PNSICT KSZ032-033-047>053-067>072-082-083-091>096-098>100-251500- Public Information Statement National Weather Service Wichita KS 600 AM CDT Thu May 25 2023 ...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY... In 1955, two violent F5 tornadoes struck North Central Oklahoma and extreme South Central Kansas. The first F5 tornado that had a track 25 miles long and around one half mile wide, barreled through Blackwell Oklahoma where 20 were killed, 280 were injured, and around $8 million damage resulted. Around 400 homes were destroyed, many of which were swept from their foundations. Around 60 businesses were heavily damaged or destroyed. Prior to hitting Blackwell, the tornado caused $150,000 damage in Tonkawa. The lightning associated with the tornado was INCREDIBLE. The vortex glowed and possessed arcs of glowing light. The tragic Udall tornado soon followed. With a track 30 miles long and averaging one half mile wide, the tornado leveled most of Udall, killed 75, injured 270, and caused $2.25 million damage. The tornado also killed 5 children 3 miles northeast of Oxford, bringing the total number of fatalities to 80. It is still the deadliest tornado in Kansas history. In 1917, an F5 tornado even larger than either the Blackwell or Udall tornadoes raced across South Central Kansas. It had a track 65 miles long and reached one mile wide. The tornado killed 23, injured 70, and caused around $600,000 damage from Northwest Sedgwick to Southeast Marion Counties. The tornado started 4 miles northwest of Cheney and struck southeast Andale, where half of the town was damaged or destroyed and 12 were killed. The vortex then struck the southern edge of Sedgwick then proceeded to 3 miles northeast of Florence. In all, 118 structures were hit of which many vanished. Its average speed of 65 mph was the fastest on record until the Tri-State Tornado of March 18, 1925. && In 2008, a massive EF5 tornado tore across Northeast Iowa. Reaching three fourths of a mile wide along a 43-mile long track, the vicious vortex possessed rotational velocities that reached 205 mph. Hardest hit was Parkersburg, where 7 were killed and around $3 million damage resulted. Two others were killed in the tiny town of New Hartford. In all, the tornado killed 9, injured 70, and caused around $6 million damage, which no doubt would have been much higher had the twister struck a more populated area. Regardless, it is the 2nd deadliest tornado in Iowa history, exceeded by a huge F5 that tore through Charles City on May 15, 1968, where and when 13 were killed. $$ Auto 217 NOUS43 KGLD 251200 PNSGLD Public Information Statement National Weather Service Goodland KS 600 AM MDT Thu May 25 2023 ...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY... The National Weather Service in partnership with the National Safe Boating Council has declared May 20 through May 26 2023 National Safe Boating Week to help promote safe boating practices across the Great Lakes and on inland lakes and waterways. Today's topic is lightning safety on the open water. No one thinks they will be struck by lightning, but the most common threat boaters face in thunderstorms is lightning. Lightning can generate a phenomenal amount of heat that can vaporize water, melt metal, or even cause objects to explode. In fact, bolts of lightning can produce extreme temperatures of over 50,000 degrees fahrenheit, or almost 5 times hotter than the surface of the sun! A lightning strike to a boat can be catastrophic, especially if it results in a fire or loss of radio and navigation equipment. Although you cannot prevent lightning from striking your boat, you can take protective measures to limit the damage. The best thing to do as soon as you see lightning or hear thunder is to head to shore and take shelter on land until the storm passes. If you must weather the storm on the water, drop anchor so the boats bow points into the wind. If your boat has a cabin, stay inside and avoid touching metal or electrical devices. If your boat doesn't have a cabin, stay as low as you can in the boat. Ensure that everyone on board is wearing their life jacket. To protect your boat, make sure it is grounded. Use a good conductive material to allow the current to travel through and off the boat through a discharge plate or the keel. Another way to minimize the risk of a lightning strike is to install a static dissipater. Even though you can't stop lightning from striking, you can take measures to minimize the damage to your boat and those on board. Two configurations of HAFSv1 will run operationally to produce similar TC track and intensity forecast model guidance as the legacy hurricane systems. 2) The two current operational hurricane systems, the Hurricane Weather Research and Forecast (HWRF) and Hurricanes in a Multi-scale Ocean- coupled Non-hydrostatic (HMON) models, will continue running operationally for the 2023 hurricane season and are currently scheduled to be decommissioned on or about November 30, 2023. The legacy models will run a maximum of 3 storms at one time and the output will be delayed an average of 30 minutes compared to HAFS. Output products from the HWRF and HMON will no longer be available on the NCEP web services (NOMADS, FTPPRD, and MAG) after decommissioning. Users should use this hurricane season to transition data retrievals to the HAFS model output. The HAFSv1 scientific and technical enhancements include the following: A. System and Infrastructure Upgrades * Finite-Volume Cubed-Sphere Dynamical Core (FV3) * Common Community Physics Package (CCPP) based physics suites tailored for hurricanes * Single convection-allowing, high-resolution (~2 km) storm-following nest with Extended Schmidt Gnomonic (ESG) grid * Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF)/Community Mediator for Earth Prediction System (CMEPS) based coupling B. Vortex Initialization Improvement * Vortex initialization modernized, leveraged from operational HWRF, cycling storm region only C. Data Assimilation Improvement * Four-dimensional ensemble-variational (4DEnVar) with background error covariances from Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS) * Data Assimilation (DA) is turned on for all National Weather Service basins, including North Atlantic, eastern North Pacific, and central North Pacific storms * Leverage observations used in Global Forecast System (GFS) * Adding new meso-scale observations including NEXRAD D. Post-processing and Products * Uses the latest version of Unified Post Processor (UPP) * Upgraded Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) tropical cyclone tracker * HFSA and HFSB will be the new model identifiers in the Automated Tropical Cyclone Forecasting System (ATCF) tracker output E. Model Physics Advancements * Use of advanced Microphysics (MP) schemes, GFDL MP for HAFS-A and Thompson MP for HAFS-B * Upgraded Turbulent Kinetic Energy-Eddy-Diffusivity Mass-Flux (TKE- EDMF) GFS Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) with TC-specific mixing length scale adjustment * GFS surface layer scheme with HWRF-type air-sea exchange coefficients suitable for hurricane prediction * Upgraded scale-aware Simplified Arakawa-Schubert (saSAS) convection parameterization with TC-specific deep convection entrainment parameter * Unified Gravity Wave Physics (UGWPv1) F. Coupling to Wave and Ocean Models * One-way coupling to WaveWatch III wave model for North Atlantic, eastern North Pacific, and central North Pacific basins * Two-way Coupled to HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) for all global basins * Extended HYCOM domain to cover both North Atlantic and North Eastern Pacific basins, initial and boundary conditions from the Real- Time Ocean Forecast System (RTOFS) model The HAFS system has been fully tested and compared with the forecast skill of 2021 operational HWRF v13.2.5 and HMONv3.2.3. Overall, it has shown improved skill by about 5-10% in both track and intensity forecasts for both North Atlantic (NATL) and Eastern Pacific (EPAC) basins.
