NWS Fairbanks AK
Special Weather Statement issued May 25 at 2:23PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK
Water levels on the Yukon River will continue to rise and reach
bankfull and likely go overbank in low lying areas over the next
few days. A large ice jam upriver from Ruby released on Sunday and
this surge of water is currently moving down the Yukon River.
Additionally, water from snowmelt is moving down the river as
well. Some low lying fish camps or remote cabins along the river
could be impacted. At this time, flooding is not expected in
Grayling, Anvik, or Holy Cross but residents should be prepared
for high water by moving items away from the river. The NWS will
continue to monitor this situation and provide updates if
conditions change.
At Russian Mission, an ice jam is causing significant flooding in
the community. See the Flood Warning for Russian Mission for more
details.

NWS Fairbanks AK
Flood Watch issued May 25 at 2:30PM AKDT until May 27 at 6:00PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK
* WHAT...Flooding caused by an ice jam is possible.
* WHERE...The Lower Yukon River From Marshall Downriver to the Coast
* WHEN...Through Saturday afternoon.
* IMPACTS...Impacts could range between localized high water and
severe flooding. If an ice jam forms, low lying villages could be
inundated with many feet of water. Ice may also push overbank and
impact structures. Now is the time to take precautions. Where
possible, move items to higher ground and prepare your community
for possible flooding. Flooding of fish camps and other remote
cabins along this stretch of the Yukon River is possible as well.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- A large surge of water and ice from an ice jam that released
above Ruby is moving downriver. This high water will be
moving through the lower Yukon River into the weekend. Ice is
still in place on portions of the lower Yukon River and at
the coast. As this surge of water arrives, it will likely
cause ice jams to form. Water levels may rise rapidly with
little notice. The most vulnerable communities will be
Emmonak, Alakanuk, and Nunam Iqua.
- Http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood
If you live near or along the Yukon River from Marshall downriver to
the coast, please stay alert and be prepared to take action.
You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood
Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared
to take action should flooding develop.

NWS Fairbanks AK
Flood Watch issued May 25 at 2:30PM AKDT until May 27 at 6:00PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK
* WHAT...Flooding caused by snowmelt is occurring.
* WHERE...The Yukon and Porcupine River
* WHEN...Through Saturday afternoon.
* IMPACTS...Water levels are running bankfull and overbank in low
lying areas and minor flooding is possible. Remote cabins and fish
camps along may experience minor flooding and significant bank
erosion is likely. Flooding is more significant in Fort Yukon and
Stevens Village. See the current Flood Warnings for additional
details.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- Rapid snowmelt has pushed a large volume of water down
tributaries feeding the Yukon and Porcupine River. This high
water will continue to move down the Yukon River over the
next several days. Water levels are falling on the Porcupine
River but are steady or slowly rising on the Yukon River.
Water levels on the Yukon River at Dawson City and Eagle
continue to slowly rise, so the Yukon River from Fort Yukon
to the Dalton Highway Bridge will remain high into next week.
- Http://weather.gov/aprfc
If you live near or along the Yukon or the Porcupine River, you are
encouraged to move valuables to higher ground, and prepare to move
yourself to higher ground at short notice.
You should monitor water levels and prepare to move to higher ground
should flooding get worse. Those living in areas prone to flooding
should take action now and move valuables to higher ground.
