The cloudy... cold weather was accompanied by occasional light snow or flurries and fog. New record low temperatures for the dates were set on the 24th thru the 29th with the lowest temperature of 11 degrees below zero on the 28th. The seven consecutive days of low temperatures of zero or below had been exceeded in duration only 4 times previously. New low maximum temperatures for the dates were set on the 23rd... 24th...and the 26th thru the 29th with the lowest maximum temperature of 8 degrees recorded on the 26th. 26-27 In 1893...heavy snowfall totaled 7.9 inches in downtown Denver. Most of the snow...6.7 inches...fell on the 27th. Northeast winds were sustained to 18 mph with gusts to 30 mph behind an apparent cold front. In 1939...heavy snowfall of 8.1 inches was the heaviest of the month in downtown Denver. North winds sustained to 21 mph on the 26th and to 28 mph on the 27th caused much drifting. The greatest snow depth on the ground was 7.8 inches at noon on the 27th. In 1987...a snowstorm dropped 4 to 8 inches of snow across metro Denver...causing flight delays at Stapleton International Airport where snowfall totaled 3.8 inches and north winds gusted to 24 mph. Both I-70 and I-25 were closed for a time to the east and south of Denver. 27 In 1896...northwest winds were sustained to 46 mph with gusts to 58 mph. In 1902...northwest winds were sustained to 50 mph with gusts as high as 60 mph. The high temperature was 44 degrees. In 1918...a post-frontal heavy snow storm developed over downtown Denver. Snowfall totaled 8.4 inches and north winds were sustained to 30 mph with a maximum velocity to 32 mph. In 1963...west winds gusted to 55 mph at Stapleton Airport. In 1974...a wind gust to 99 mph was recorded in Boulder. West winds gusted to 43 mph at Stapleton International Airport. In 2009...a strong wind gusts blew a trailer in the path of two vehicles along State Highway 36...between Boulder and Lyons. The vehicles were in the northbound lane when a wind gust blew a fifth-wheel trailer into their path... as it approached from the opposite lane. The trailer left the road surface...and collided with the top left side of the first car; causing extensive damage. A van following the first vehicle then struck the trailer. The driver of the van suffered facial injuries. 27-28 In 1918...heavy snowfall totaled 9.6 inches in downtown Denver. Most of the snow...8.4 inches...fell on the 27th. In 1931...a major winter storm dumped 12.0 inches of heavy snowfall over downtown Denver. This is the greatest 24 hour snowfall ever recorded during the month of February. North winds gusted to 18 mph on the 28th. In 2006...a warm spell resulted in 3 temperature records. The high temperature of 73 degrees on the 27th equaled the record high for the date. Visibilities were initially good enough to allow students and teachers to reach school, but many recalled the tragic blizzard of 1931 and decided not to attend. One teacher braved the elements and reached her school, the Novak School in Scott County. By the mid morning, however, snow had increased. By the afternoon, roads were impassable. The teacher spent the night at the school after bringing in an extra supply of coal to keep the school house warm. The purpose of this test is to support the Kentucky Statewide Tornado Drill, part of Kentucky’s annual Severe Weather Awareness Week. The use of the live event code is intended to maximize participation in the Statewide Tornado Drill by local Emergency Management Agencies and by broadcast partners, increasing the preparedness of partners and the public. The emergency test message will be broadcast across the Commonwealth of Kentucky via audio and Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) tones over 38 of the 41 NOAA Weather Radio transmitters serving Kentucky and will activate the Emergency Alert System (EAS). Per agreement with Cincinnati-area broadcasters, the live code test will not be conducted for the counties in northern Kentucky served by the WFO in Wilmington, Ohio. The audio message will state that the message is only a test. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) text messages will use a Valid Time Event Code (VTEC) Product Class Code of /T/ for Test and the word Test will be repeated several times in the body of the message. The test will not be sent to cellphones via the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system, although in an actual Tornado Warning this system would be used. Please note the 38 participating NWR transmitters conducting the live event code test will not conduct a Required Weekly Test on March 5, 2025. The test will be postponed and rescheduled to a fair-weather day if there are significant weather hazards in Kentucky on the morning of March 5. To: Subscribers: - Family of Services - NOAA Weather Wire Service - Emergency Managers Weather Information Network - Other NWS partners, users, and employees From: James E. Lee Meteorologist in Charge Baltimore/Washington Weather Forecast Office Subject: Return of Water Level Observations on the Potomac River at Harpers Ferry WV Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, in coordination with the United States Geological Survey, has installed a new stage-only river gauge on the Potomac River. The new gauge is located slightly upstream from where the Shenandoah River merges into the Potomac River. This gauge is a replacement for the previous gauge that was destroyed by a train derailment in December 2019. Water level observations have been reported on the Potomac River at Harpers Ferry since at least the 1877. Water level observations from the new gauge will be made public on the National Weather Service’s National Water Prediction Service website beginning at 12 UTC (7:00 AM EST) on 28 February 2025. Water level data for the Harpers Ferry gauge can be found at the following website: https://water.noaa.gov/gauges/HFEW2 Flood Categories will remain unchanged from the previous levels: 1. The major flood stage at this river gauge will remain at 24 feet. 2. The moderate flood stage at this river gauge will remain at 21.5 feet. 3. The minor flood stage at this river gauge will remain at 18 feet. The new product is currently available as an experimental product here: https://testbed.swpc.noaa.gov/products/solar-cycle-progression- interactive This updated prediction is an enhancement of the solar cycle progression products now distributed on the following public webpages: https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/solar-cycle-progression https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/predicted-sunspot-number-and- radio-flux https://services.swpc.noaa.gov/json/solar-cycle/predicted-solar- cycle.json The existing products include a prediction for Solar Cycle 25 from an international panel composed of experts from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/National Aeronautics and Space Administration/International Space Environment Services that convened in 2019 and presented their findings at the 2019 Annual Space Weather Workshop. The new product leverages the latest observations of the international sunspot number and the 10.7 cm radio flux to provide more accurate predictions of solar activity progression through the year 2030. This new version provides the following products, each of which will be updated on a monthly basis (on or about the 2nd day of the month) as new observations become available: 1. A graphical figure showing the observed monthly sunspot number for Solar Cycle 25, which began in 2019, and the predicted sunspot number through 2032. Uncertainty in the prediction is portrayed as quartiles. 2. Similar to item 1 but showing observations and predictions for the F10.7 cm radio flux through 2032. 3. A file in JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) format containing quantitative values for the predicted sunspot number and F10.7 cm radio flux through 2032, with estimated uncertainties. Effective on or about March 31, 2025, these new experimental products will replace the current Solar Cycle and F10.7 cm radio flux predictions on the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) website. A Product Description Document for the Operational Deployment of Updated Solar Cycle Prediction Product is provided online: https://nsdesk.servicenowservices.com/api/g_noa/nwspc/res2/c91e8 a56973bd6508881bb7de053afbe For any additional comments/feedback on this change at SWPC, please contact: Mark Miesch CIRES/University of Colorado NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center Boulder, CO Email: mark.miesch@noaa.gov and Dr. Jennifer Meehan National Space Weather Program Manager National Weather Service Headquarters Silver Spring, MD Email: jennifer.meehan@noaa.gov National Service Change Notices are online at: https://www.weather.gov/notification 086 NOUS41 KALY 271548 PNSALY CTZ001-013-MAZ001-025-NYZ032-033-038>043-047>054-058>061-063>066-082>084- VTZ013>015-280348- Public Information Statement National Weather Service Albany NY 1048 AM EST Thu Feb 27 2025 ...SNOWFALL REPORTS...
